"Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to your self, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
In chapter 6 of his letter to the church in Corinth, Paul counsels the fellowship to live morally. He counsels that they should care for each, not take advantage of each other, and to avoid sexual immorality. He sums up this chapter by reminding them that their bodies are not their own. That we are beautifully and wonderfully made. When we think of the miracle of life itself, the chance that you and I are here, is not by accident. We were created beautifully, wonderfully and purposely.
God did not purpose you into existence to watch you waste away on drugs and alcohol.
God did not purpose you into existence to watch you waste away on unhealthy foods.
God did not purpose you into existence to watch you shorten your life by unhealthy habits.
God did not purpose you into existence to watch you share you body in un-holy unions.
Anything that God created, He said it was Good. But when He created you and I, He said "It was Very Good." Genesis 1:31. Since we are created in His image, we should live our lives in honor of the royalty that we are. "Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit." Which suggest that the Spirt that gives us life, is the Spirit that dwells in us. And since we live by the Spirit and power of God, we are to honor God in all that we do.
He not only created you, he saved you. The same God who is the creator of all, is the Savior of all. John 1:1. He made you for His Glory and He saved you for His Glory. He wants the best for you. Not in some distant future, but right now.
One of the most important ways we can honor our creator is by taking care of the body that He has given us. "For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit; which are God's" I Cor. 6:20
So how can we honor and glorify God with our bodies? By taking care of ourselves spiritually, mentally and physically.
Spiritual Care: Spend time in prayer, Bible readings, devotional readings, service to others, and meditation on good things.
Mental Care: Spend time reading and watching things that offer hope and encouragement. Avoid negative information, people and situations. Encourage someone today, you will find that this will also help you to be encouraged. Talk to someone you know and trust about your challenges, we all have them.
Physical Care: Get plenty of rest and exercise, eat healthy, eschew drugs and alcohol at all costs, maintain a healthy work/life balance and get regular check-ups.
